The answer to spiralling electricity costs is blowing in the wind at The Flower Bank.

We have now erected two wind turbines to supply our headquarters in Cumbria with clean sustainable energy.

"It's another step forward in making the business as sustainable as possible," said owner Helen Wilson.

It is part of our environmental campaign to 'green' as much of our operations as possible.

In addition to growing some of our own foliage crops we also gather rainwater for plant storage, compost green waste and recycle card.

A longer-term goal is to look at replacing diesel-powered vehicles with models that can run on electricity, explained Helen.

Cumbria Business Environment Network (CBEN) recently awarded us a bronze award for our initiatives and we are now moving toward silver accreditation.

The second wind turbine is erected at The Flower Bank

Our two 18 metre-high turbines were erected last week by Sustainable Energy Systems Ltd and have already started producing electricity.

BBC1's The Politics Show featured our business on a recent programme examining the effect of rising oil prices on rural businesses in the UK.

"The wind turbines are our attempt to take control of our energy needs because rising energy costs are completely out of our control," said Helen.

"The site for the wind turbines was monitored for several months and was found to generate good wind speeds.

"The statistics show that the two turbines will generate all our electricity and even a surplus which we can sell into to the national grid.

"As far as I am aware, we are the only flower wholesaler in the country to generate our own sustainable electricity."
