DRESS DESIGNER KARL SAYS IT WITH FLOWERS... PENRITH dress designer Karl Bowman is proving that roses really do grow on you... His latest stunning catwalk creation is fashioned from real fresh flowers and will form the finale of his 2011 Runway Collection. "It’s a more flamboyant, more avant-garde dress than any that I have created so far," said the 25-year-old. The Flower Bank supplied Karl with an array of suitable roses. "Pink Piano, Pink O’Hara, Aphrodite and Snowflake are some of the varieties I suggested," said Flower Bank assistant Rachael Little. "Amaranthus and gypsophila were also added in for an extra floral flourish." "It’s been fascinating assisting Karl with the dress and seeing his imagination at close hand." With an inner layer of polished aspidistra leaves, Karl designed the three-tiered dress with his sister-in-law and model Elizabeth Bowman in mind. |

"She’s very petite and it perfectly suits her colouring and hair," said Karl, who trades under the Karl Bowman England label. His first Runway Collection in 2010 was a huge success and his next two shows at the North Lakes Hotel, Penrith later this month are already sell-outs. "I’ll be unveiling 50 new dresses at the show and Elizabeth will model this dress at the end," said Karl. Despite having only entered the world of couture a year ago he is already making waves in the fashion industry. Karl has waiting lists for his bespoke bridal and occasional dresses with prices starting from £200. "I’ve been asked by brides to create flowers out of fabrics for dresses but not for a dress to be made out of flowers," he said. "Maybe it will start a trend in Cumbria. Keeping the flowers fresh is the main problem but I’m thinking of incorporating test tubes of water into the design," he said. "I absolutely love the dress and would love to wear it out in town," added Elizabeth.
